Petit Verdot is an ancient red grape variety that originated in the Bordeaux region of France centuries ago. Its late ripening makes it a special grape variety, and it has enjoyed a revival in particularly sunny wine-growing regions, such as the Vignobles Foncalieu region, where the southern climate is perfectly suited to the specific characteristics of this sometimes little-known variety. Discover it for yourself!

Petit Verdot from Bordeaux to Perpignan
Petit Verdot lives up to its name. Its bunches are small and compact, the grapes dark. The presence of tannins makes for powerful, aromatic wines, often used as a back-up grape in the more complex blends of Bordeaux wines. Over time, the grape variety has made its mark in Languedoc Roussillon (from Nissan Lez Enserune to Perpignan), thanks in particular to Vignobles Foncalieu, who dared to develop single-varietal cuvées.
100% Petit Verdot wines
Climate change is giving this late-ripening grape a second lease of life in southern regions and in sunny countries such as Spain, California and Australia. In France, Vignobles Foncalieu in particular have found in Petit Verdot an autonomous grape variety, capable of sublimating very fine cuvées such as Ensedune Petit Verdot.
Where can I buy varietal wines?
The Vignobles Foncalieu region (Aude, Hérault, Languedoc, Occitanie) offers various cellars and online stores where you can taste 100% Petit Verdot wines. Among the wines most representative of this grape variety, we recommend you try this cuvée:
– L’ensedune Petit Verdot
How to enjoy “Ensedune”?
As mentioned above, the 100% Petit Verdot cuvée “Ensedune” is a wine that could surprise a meal among friends. On the nose, the wine is full of spicy, peppery aromas. On the palate, the wine is fleshy and complex, with rich notes of wild strawberry, citrus and peony. We recommend you enjoy this single-vineyard cuvée with grilled meat in summer.
If you’re passing through the Carcassonne region, this cuvée can be tasted at the Comptoir de la Cité in Carcassonne. A place with a breathtaking view of the Cité de Carcassonne, where you can taste all our cuvées.
A Petit Verdot restaurant? Yes, there is!
If you’re travelling through the south of France and Petit Verdot is your favorite wine, then take the time to visit the eponymous restaurant in Aix en Provence. Restaurant Petit Verdot, 7 Rue d’Entrecasteaux, offers a wine list of over 100 wines, including the nuggets of the Petit Verdot grape variety.
